Weidong Mao is an architect, inventor and technology leader with more than 25 years of experience in the cable industry. He currently is Senior Fellow in Comcast’s Technology & Product group.
A prolific inventor with more than 80 granted patents, Weidong has made significant contributions in IP video, advanced compression, content delivery networks, video on demand and cloud DVR. He was named an IEEE Fellow in 2014 for his contributions to video on demand technologies and cloud computing.
At Comcast, Weidong leads the Strategic Architecture and Technology team, exploring next generation technologies for platforms and services. He co-founded and leads the Lighthouse program, where Distinguished Engineers and Fellows focus on technology strategy and thought leadership. He served as Chief Architect for the X1 IP video platform, including cloud DVR, and pioneered the Next Generation On Demand (NGOD) specification and its development.
Before joining Comcast in 2003, Weidong was Chief Architect at Liberate Technologies, an interactive TV software provider. Previously, he was Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of MoreCom (acquired by Liberate), Director of Motorola’s Telecommunication Unit and Senior Member of Technical Staff at Philips Labs.
Weidong is a member of ACM, SCTE, SMPTE and IEEE. He received a PhD in electrical engineering from Princeton University and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Peking University. He gives back to the community through mentorship and education activities and enjoys running, hiking, traveling and golfing.
